The Stiftung Warentest cooked coffee: 21 products from espresso and caffè crema beans has prepared and tasted the consumer organization for the issue of its magazine "Test" (issue 01/22).The coffees were not only tested for taste, smell and appearance, the laboratory also checked the products for critical ingredients, declaration and user -friendliness of the packaging.

According to the expectations of consumers, the roasters were based: "This is how a mainstream taste is created" is the judgment.Coffee from crema beans in particular hardly differs in taste.Body, bitterness, acidity and roasted aroma are almost consistently medium. In contrast, the differences in taste are stronger for espresso beans.

Whether expensive or cheap: no problems with pollutants

The price differences in the test are large: the beans cost between 8 and 34 euros per kilo.Overall, there is hardly anything to complain about in terms of quality. The guideline for the pollutant acrylamide that arises when roasting and can change the genetic material and possibly cause cancer..It is 400 micrograms per kilo.

Furan, also an accompanying product of the Roast, which led to cancer and liver damage in animal experiments, is not a problem in the prepared coffee of the test candidates: of the fleeting substance that the testers showed in the bean, only go into the cup of little:"No coffee cuts worse than satisfactory in the pollutant judgment," said the conclusion. The overall judgment is "good" for 20 products, only one cut off with "satisfactory".

Sustainability before saving price

The foundation nevertheless advises against problem -conscious consumers from making coffee shopping only dependent on the price.Only nine products in the test carry an organic or sustainability seal.Because coffee plantations are moving into a higher location due to climate change, the rainforest cultivation is cut down there."If all of this doesn't care, you should not look for the cheapest offers, but buy sustainably grown coffee.“Coffee from companies that rely on direct trading can also be a good choice.

In the current test, however, the Stiftung Warentest found only a few products with the EU organic seal and the common sustainability seals Rainforest Alliance, Utz and Fairtrade. The latter certification guarantees the addition to the minimum price for raw coffee and a bonus.
