    To top

How does an electric toothbrush work?

An electric toothbrush consists of an electric motor, brush heads, a housing and a switch. Finally, the switch connects the motor to the battery. The motor shaft can transmit the rotation in oscillating movements through the gearbox.

In most cases, the electric toothbrush consists of the following components:

These create the typical movements of the brush. The circular movements rotate in all directions.

Benefits & Disadvantages of the electric toothbrush:

    Charge the toothbrush properly

The case must be waterproof to avoid dangerous short circuits and electric shocks. In most cases, you simply plug the toothbrush into a charging station to charge it. The charging principle is based on induction: the primary coil generates an electromagnetic field in the charging station. This induces electrical voltage in the secondary coil of the handpiece.

    Who invented the electric toothbrush?

In the early days of dental care, people used chewing sticks to remove leftover food from between the teeth. The first toothbrushes were made of bone and bamboo. The first early model of an electric toothbrush came out in 1880.

Dr. Scott has submitted a patent application for an electrical device that was already similar in its basic features to today's electric toothbrush. The first electric toothbrush on the market was the Broxodent - in 1954 the Swiss Dr. Philippe-Guy Woog developed this model. With this brush, the bristles move back and forth automatically. To this day, this model is the forerunner for all subsequent electric toothbrushes.

Oral-B's first automatic brush was the Mayadent, released in 1963. The annoying power cable and no clear advantage compared to manual toothbrushes stood in the way of their triumph. It was the rechargeable battery and the rotating brushes that were able to give this invention a helping hand.

How to use the electric toothbrush correctly

You should brush your teeth two to three times a day for two minutes each time. The minimum duration for a round is 2 minutes. We have manual toothbrushes, electric brushes, oral irrigators and dental floss available for this purpose. Actually, using this toothbrush does not pose a great challenge. After all, it is intended to make brushing your teeth easier and more efficient.

    1. Put a small amount of toothpaste on the bristles of the brush head.
    2. Run some water over the bristles. This has a positive effect on foam development.
    3. Put the brush in your mouth to your teeth.
    4. Press the ON-OFF switch and choose a level.
    5. Now move this brush along the teeth and don't miss any spot.
    6. Clean the brush head thoroughly and put the toothbrush back in the holder.
Tip: You should Clean the electric toothbrush regularly and thoroughly. Take your time and wipe every component. Toothpaste can settle here very quickly.

Manual and electric: How do you really clean your teeth?

Actually, everyone should brush their teeth after eating. Plaque – i.e. the deposits on the teeth – must be completely removed. With manual toothbrushes, you have to perform the movements manually and place the toothbrush on your teeth at a 45-degree angle. You work your way along the entire chewing surface – from the inside and outside.

It is important to use the right toothpaste with sufficient fluoride. In comparison, you put the vibrating electric toothbrushes parallel to your teeth. Round head brushes are suitable for those who meticulously work down every tooth. Wide brush heads catch several teeth at once. This way you can clean a larger area and don't have to put it down quite as precisely. The sonic toothbrushes clean the bristles with a 45 degree angle.

Practical tips for brushing your teeth:

    1. Cleans a section that spans between two to three teeth.
    2. Best cleans teeth from the outside in, starting with the upper jaw.
    3. On the occlusal surfaces you can brush the molars a little harder.
    4. Finally, the tongue is cleaned with a special tongue cleaner. This flushes all bacteria out of the mouth.
    5. Stubborn residue and deposits can be cleaned with dental floss and an interdental brush.

What is better? An electric toothbrush or a sonic toothbrush?

Now there are two types of electric toothbrushes on the market:

    1. Oscillating toothbrushes: Over 40,000 back and forth movements and around 7,000 sideways movements, the brush simulates a 3D effect when cleaning to reach more places.
    2. Sonic toothbrushes: The heart is a Microchip in toothbrushes that works with sonic energy. The high-frequency waves cause the bristles to vibrate. Human saliva provides the fluid for microcirculation to be able to remove plaque even at a distance of 3 millimeters. The increased ion exchange ensures optimal care of the gums. Anyone brushing with a sonic toothbrush for the first time will probably notice a slight tickling sensation.

Buying guide: Which electric toothbrush is right for me?

    EquipmentFeaturesAdvantages
TimerShows the correct cleaning time of 2 minutes .The quantum timer calls for a change in the quadrant of the teeth.
Memory functionThe memory function remains after a brief switch-off exist.Intuitive brushing according to the dentist's specifications is easier with this function.
FrequencyAs the oscillation frequency increases, the Cleaning performance.Toothbrushes with a high frequency should remove more plaque.
Pressure controlAre you exerting too much pressure on the gums , stop the cleaning movements. This function avoids injuries and bleeding gums.
Combi devicesIn addition to the toothbrushes, there is a set Brush and oral irrigator. With dental equipment, you can achieve 100% healthy oral hygiene.
Brush brushChoose choose the right brushes for your teeth. The lifespan of a good electric toothbrush is extremely long, since you only replace the brushes.

Which electric toothbrush for receding gums?

Electric toothbrushes with automatic control can avoid the typical mistakes made when brushing your teeth. We often act on the gums with too much pressure. This can cause lasting damage to the teeth, which manifests itself in a disorder of the tooth enamel and receding gums. If an electric toothbrush has a pressure sensor, it emits a warning signal if you brush with too much force. The gums will definitely benefit from this feature.

    Which electric toothbrush for brackets?

Oral surgeons and dentists prescribe braces or brackets if there is a misaligned tooth. It is definitely recommended to correct misaligned teeth. Otherwise, you may have problems chewing and swallowing later. In fact, very few are born with perfect teeth. Around 70 percent of those under the age of 18 wear braces at least once.

If a braces wearer chooses a sonic toothbrush, they have the opportunity to brush their teeth more thoroughly and gently. The specialists in this area are the interdental brushes. They clean the areas around the brackets. Electric toothbrushes with particularly short bristle heads are recommended for the rest of the tooth surface. In the beginning, you will need a little practice and a sure instinct to really get rid of all the food leftovers from the wires of the brackets. The practical functions of the electric toothbrushes, which ensure more thorough and easier tooth cleaning, help with this.

Many orthodontists recommend toothbrushes with sonic technology, since particularly high speeds are used on the bristle tips. This sets in motion a higher level of saliva development, which enables intensive cleaning even in hard-to-reach places. Round head brushes are recommended for fixed braces. There are also Ortho brush heads that are equipped with a special brush ring. The Interspace brush heads have specialized in cleaning the spaces between the teeth and ensure more effective oral hygiene.

    Which electric toothbrush for implants?

If you not only want to clean your natural teeth thoroughly, but also the implants, you can benefit from the technical refinements of electric toothbrushes. After all, an implant is made up of other components if we compare it to the gum. Nevertheless, plaque should be completely removed from teeth and implants during daily dental hygiene without damaging the tissue. Regardless of the technology, sonic toothbrushes and normal electric toothbrushes are equipped with the appropriate technical requirements to gently but thoroughly clean the implants.

A main focus of the assessment is the intensity of the exposure to high-frequency vibrations. The dentists install the implant abutments with a correspondingly safe torque that is stable when chewing. The risk of loosening should therefore be extremely low.

Nevertheless, to this day there is no knowledge as to whether brushing with electric toothbrushes loosens or damages implants.

    Which electric toothbrush for children?

Stiftung Warentest recommends special toothbrushes for children. Own these children's brushes

which fit perfectly in small hands. With an electric toothbrush you can also increase the motivation to keep to the tooth brushing times. Basically, the age recommendation on the electric children's toothbrushes makes sense. Preschoolers don't like the big brush heads and intense vibrations. Adult toothbrushes with an electric motor are usually not for kindergarten children. The schoolchildren are free to choose between using toothbrushes for children from the age of three or brushes for adults.

Which electric toothbrush do dentists recommend?

Before buying an electric toothbrush, it makes sense to talk to your dentist. The experts recommend a short brush head. In this way you can also reach hard-to-reach places in the mouth and the back of the molars, which are often neglected with a manual toothbrush. The gums are not further damaged by a medium-soft degree of hardness and with the help of a pressure sensor. A good electric toothbrush is comfortable to hold and easy to move.

In direct comparison to manual toothbrushes, electric toothbrushes clean with several thousand revolutions per minute. The human hand simply cannot do that. As a result, we definitely clean more thoroughly with an electric toothbrush. Under no circumstances should you neglect the brushing movements and the recommendations for brushing your teeth that dentists have been giving their patients for many years.

    How to clean electric toothbrushes?

If you don't clean your electric toothbrush regularly, you quickly become a slingshot for bacteria and germs. Finally, the brush heads pick up the leftover food and debris from the teeth. You can only achieve 100 percent hygiene if you clean the electric toothbrush regularly. Commercial cleaning agents and a damp cloth are sufficient for the plastic area, the handles and the casing. Don't leave out the charging station when cleaning.

If you brush your teeth with hard or hard water, limescale stains can quickly form on the brush. You can remove these stains in no time with warm water and vinegar. For particularly stubborn dirt, dip a cloth in the vinegar-water mixture and then wrap it around the toothbrush. After thorough cleaning, the electric toothbrush should be rinsed off properly.

Change the brush head after 2-3 months. After that, this part belongs in the trash. The brushes would become much too soft over time and would no longer clean properly. In the meantime, regularly dipping the brushes in a denture cleaner solution should do the trick. This concentrate actually kills almost all bacteria safely. Special cleaning agents for the bristles are available in drugstores and specialty stores. Much more expensive disinfectants for toothbrushes rarely achieve significantly better results.

Where can I dispose of my electric toothbrush?

As the name suggests, the electric toothbrush is one of the small electrical household appliances. So you can't just dispose of them in the household waste. The collection points are the municipal material depot, recycling centers, building depots or special recycling services that are offered by Deutsche Post, among others. Municipal disposal is free in most cases. In addition, the leading brands offer in-house recycling services. When you buy a new electric toothbrush, these manufacturers accept the old devices free of charge up to an edge length of 25 centimeters.

Is there an electric toothbrush test by Stiftung Warentest?

Stiftung Warentest checks electric toothbrushes at regular intervals. After the last update in November 2020, there are a total of 59 tested models in the consumer organization's database. Handling, service life and loads are put to the test. At first glance, oscillating-rotating brushes can be recognized by the round heads that move back and forth in a semi-circle.

You can recognize sound-active brushes by their elongated heads. Despite the name, you don't clean your teeth with sound. You clean the teeth by vibrating at a very high frequency. This creates the typical buzzing sound. The Stiftung Warentest was unable to determine a more intensive cleaning performance in either of the two types. So the benefit goes to convenience. With the rounded bristles you guide the toothbrush from tooth to tooth. The elongated bristles clean several teeth at once. This makes the sonic toothbrushes more comfortable to use.

The assumption that you would brush faster with an electric toothbrush is a fallacy. You also have to invest 2 minutes with these brushes. With an integrated timer, you keep the time under control. According to the Stiftung Warentest, there are already good electric brushes for little money. The choice depends on the cleaning type and the requirements. Attention: Not to be neglected is the price of the replacement toothbrushes, which you change every three months. Here the prices for the brush heads range from less than one euro to 20 euros. In the electric toothbrush test, the costs for the power consumption of the hand brushes came to no more than 4 euros per year, so that all devices have moderate energy consumption.

If you want to take your toothbrush with you when you travel, make sure that the battery life is correspondingly long. Then you can leave the charging station in the bathroom at home.

In November 2019, Stiftung Warentest also tested replacement toothbrushes for devices from the Braun Oral B series and the Philips Sonicare models. A total of eight different products were put to the test, including those from Müller, Rossmann, dm and Carolina Meyer. You can access the detailed test results for a small fee on this website.

Another test by Stiftung Warentest in February 2020 dealt with dental floss. The testers from the consumer organization examined twelve products. When used properly, most products should clean well. Stiftung Warentest hides the detailed details behind a payment barrier. You can find the results here.

What does Öko Test say about electric toothbrushes?

In November 2021, the professionals from Öko Test extensively tested electric toothbrushes. A total of twelve sonic toothbrushes and rotary toothbrushes were tested. The less pleasing result: Only three models received the grade Very Good. On the other hand, one product even received the grade "insufficient". Which? You can find out more about this at Öko Test under this link.
