Get on the vegetables

By Amelie von Kruederer

The garden now needs a few basic work so that the plants can start in spring and summer.Fertilizing, late snowdrops, the first vegetables and the necessary plant cut are now on it.

The garden season is open

Yes, exactly now you can get started with garden scissors and shovels. The garden literally screams for care in February.Hedges and trees are cut, beds are prepared, the first vegetables are preferred. And if you definitely want to get rid of a few bulbs, you can also contribute a bit to the beauty of the garden with a look at the weather.

Snowdrops and winterlings are among the first flowers a year.If you have not set onions in autumn, if it is frost -free, you can now plant early snowdrops from the garden center.Punch a hole in the ground and put the onions together with the earth.

Do not forget pouring

Pouring is often forgotten in winter. If it doesn't rain for a while, but it should be snow and frost-free, container plants and all evergreen plants in the garden need a sip of water so that they do not dry up.Boxwood and cherry laurel will thank you.Even the potted plants that hibernate in the basement must not be forgotten.

The ideal time for the first fertilization in the year

There is now a lack of nutrients in the beds.Wherever vegetables and flowers have sucked out of the ground in summer, it can now be fertilized.Organic fertilizer donates all important nutrients at the start of the season.Particularly good composters are suitable for this, which cannot be washed out by the winter rain. But a bought full fertilizer also does a good job.

Time for a good cut from the hedge and fruit tree

The resting phase of hedges, shrubs and trees is the ideal time to cut the trees back and in shape with the pruning shears or hedge trimmer.Without leaves you can see particularly well whether a pruning is necessary.

Up to 1.March has to be done, because after that a strong pruning and the "put on the stick" to protect birds is no longer allowed.

Where and how do you cut?

You cut off the branches briefly above the bud.If the branch is thicker, you cut briefly over a junction - so that the junction still stops. The exception is the rhododendron - there the branches are turned off under the junction. The angle of the cutting edge should also be observed: 45 degrees are perfect so that no rainwater remains on the cutting edge and lazy points do not even arise.More on the subject of fruit tree cuts, we explain here.

What can be in the vegetable bed now?

Anyone who has a vegetable patch or raised bed can begin with sowing.Which can already be opened as a seed:

What can be sown into the early bed in February?

If you have an early bed or greenhouse, you can sow a lot under glass or foil:

What can be preferred on the windowsill?

Plants on the windowsill need a special portion of care. You want it bright, but not too sunny. You need enough moisture, but no waterlogging, you want warmth, but no heat.A mini guards helps to take into account the various preferences. Thanks are robust plants that promise a rich harvest in summer.

The lawn in February

There is little to do.It even applies: less is more, the lawn has winter rest, so to speak, and does not need any care yet.Only those who have light and sandy soil should fertilize for the first time at the end of February, early March.Heavy and loamy soils have a larger nutrient store and should still wait.
