Stiko advises pregnant women from the 2.Trimenon as well as breastfeeding and women with desire to have children to vaccination against Covid-19.

It is an important moment for all women in Germany who expect a child, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy. After months of pressing the gynecological associations based on scientific recommendations [1] there is now a breakthrough. After evaluating the existing evidence, the constant vaccination commission (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recommends (as of 17.September 2021) All unvaccinated pregnant women from the 2.Trimenon and unvaccinated breastfeeding to vaccination against COVID-19 with two doses of an mRNA vaccine

If the pregnancy was found after the initial vaccination, the associated second vaccination should only be.Trimenon is recommended, the STIKO recommends.[3]

The STIKO formulates three goals of vaccination from pregnant women and breastfeeding:

  1. Verhinderung schwerer COVID-19-Verläufe und Todesfälle bei Schwangeren und Stillenden,
  2. Verhinderung von Schwangerschaftskomplikationen durch eine SARS-CoV-2- Infektion,
  3. Verhinderung von fetalen und neonatalen Folgen einer SARS-CoV-2-Infektion in der Schwangerschaft.

“Although the vaccination recommendation is late compared to other countries, we welcome the result of the STIKO extremely. The recommendation is completely in our sense - the scientific justification is very saturated. Now gynecologists can advise their patients about the advantages of vaccination protection and highly well-founded immunization against Covid-19.“Prof.Dr.Ekkehard Schleussner, head of the group of authors for the vaccination recommendations of the gynecological associations

As the authors of the STIKO recommendation perform in the epidemiological bulletin 38/21 [3], vaccination creates a very good protective effect against infection and severe covid-19 processes in pregnant women as in non-pregnant women as in non-pregnant women. There were no frequent occurrence of serious occurrence of severe undesirable drug effects (UAW) during pregnancy or an increased risk of severe UAW during breastfeeding for mother and child, especially not from miscarriages up to 19.Pregnancy Week (SSW), premature births, dead births or malformations. In addition, a transfer of maternal anti-Sars-COV-2 antibodies via the placenta has been proven. As part of their recommendations in spring 2021, the medical obstetricians had already reported [1] that the maternal antibodies can cause a certain protection of infection, a so -called leisure time for the newborn.

In addition, the Commission expressly advises all not yet or incompletely vaccinated age in childbearing age after medical education, so that there is a very good protection against the virus before occurring pregnancy before occurring pregnancy.

Background: In the case of previous illnesses (such as obesity, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus), the risk of a serious illness after SARS-COV-2 infection is further increased. The vaccination protects pregnant women like non-pregnant women very well against symptomatic Sars-Cov-2 infections and against heavy covid-19 courses with hospitalization.Although there are currently no studies to protect pregnant women from the delta variant, it can be assumed that unvaccinated pregnant women are more at risk due to the increased infectiveness of the delta variant of SARS-COV-2.

Note: In order to protect pregnant women indirectly, the gynecological associations also recommend vaccination of close contact persons, in particular the immediate civil partners.
